Canada Turns 150

Surrey is SERIOUS about celebrating this big, beautiful nation’s birthday. Our annual Canada Day celebration at the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Cloverdale is legendary, and is known as Western Canada’s biggest birthday bash. From iconic Canadian headliners to amazing food, family friendly rides and face painting, there’s a lot to see, do, hear, and take in.

So for a big milestone, say a century and a half, Surrey is going all-out. We’re not just talking about a one day event (which will be headlined by local and Juno award winning band Hedley), but an entire year of festivities have been planned to commemorate one-hundred-and-fifty years of Canadian pride.

Many of Surrey’s staple events are incorporating Canada 150 zones in their events. Pop superstar Shawn Hook will be headlining Party for the Planet coming up on April 22nd, and Surrey Doors Open on June 17th will put a little Canadian twist to the typical celebrations. The Surrey International Children’s Festival, July’s cultural explosion called Fusion Festival will host headliner Nelly Furtado, and the Tree Lighting Festival in November will also incorporate Canada 150 themes into each event.

If big crowds and weekend extravaganza’s aren’t your scene, there will be a number of on-going exhibits, performances, and smaller community events that will feature the Canada 150 theme. The Surrey Art Gallery will host Canada 150 Art by Surrey Students from February 11 to April 16, that will be an introspective look at the future of Canada from a youth’s perspective. Surrey’s weekly summer music event, the Sounds of Summer Concert Series is planning a spectacular finale embracing the Canada 150 celebrations.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Canada Day this year, spend this special holiday in Surrey with over 100,000 residents and visitors of the city, or take the time throughout this year to wish Canada a very happy 150th birthday.
