Diwali Fest

Diwali is the holiday marked on the calendar that many in the South Asian community look forward to each and every year. Originally a Hindu celebration, The purpose and meaning behind Diwali varies within different religions, however one aspect of the day remains the same: it’s all about positivity. This year marks the 12th year that Surrey has been embracing all the light and warmth that Diwali symbolises with the annual Diwali Downtown Surrey Festival.

Known as the the festival of Lights to some, Diwali is celebrated all over the world as the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty, and knowledge over ignorance. Moreover, Diwali celebrates the light that’s inside each and every one of us. Originating from the celebration of the last harvest before Winter in hopes of a prosperous new year, today, Surrey’s Diwali festival seeks to break down cultural barriers and embrace all forms of art to build a bigger sense of community.

If this sounds incredibly wonderful to you, join the club! So what exactly can you expect at Surrey’s Diwali celebrations this Saturday, November 5th? With over 15 unique musical and dance performances that will grace the stage, including Shiamak Vancouver for a Bollywood dance performance finale, as well as an Indian style market place to browse through, this colourful and bright event is one you’ll want to remember with a few photographs.

And like any holiday that’s close to our hearts, time with our loved ones is one of the best parts, followed closely by the food! Featuring lots of delicious South Asian foods and kid friendly crafts, this is a celebration that’s not only free to attend (donations are welcomed), but great for the whole family.
