Get Cultured!

Let your creative side soar this weekend! Thousands of free, hands-on and unique cultural events are happening across Canada, including Surrey, from Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29 for the 10th annual Culture Days Weekend.

This year the theme is Creativity, The Arts, and Well-being and many of the events taking place will showcase how art and culture contribute positively to quality of life. Surrey will be celebrating on Saturday, September 28 from 1 pm – 5 pm at Guildford Town Centre, so head on over and join in the cultural celebration at this free, family-friendly event.

Surrey Culture Days Highlights:

Heritage Hangout
Discover Surrey’s past with hands-on activities from the Surrey Archives and the Historic Stewart Farm. Try your hand at a Then and Now game, watch a slide show of archival images of the Guildford neighbourhood and see if you can Guess the Gadget.

Make your own monster
Create your own art monster sun catcher at Surrey Art Gallery’s pop-up art booth! Friendly and experienced artist-educators and volunteers will encourage your imagination as you explore recycled materials for your take-home artwork. Plus, don’t forget your art monster stamp and button!

Performances
Surrey Civic Theatres and the City of Surrey’s Arts & Heritage Services, are also heading to Guildford Town Centre again this year, and invite you to enjoy and join in on free performances – all in Centre Court. Check out sneak peeks from their upcoming season: including Axis Theatre Company’s “Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish”, a beautiful story “from the Kwantlen First Nations Village of Squa’lets, about Th’owxiya, an old and powerful spirit that inhabits a feast dish”; and Sitar Guitar Collaboration, which is an “attempt to break barriers and connect different ends of this world through music.” Take a Salsa dance lesson accompanied by a Conga player and listen to four musicians from the 6th Annual Band-Aid: Youth Musician Development Workshop who will be selected to perform their own original music.

Art at Work – Artist Talk
Learn more about 2 of Surrey’s newest public artworks at a free talk with the artists. “The Frasers” by Laara Cerman is Surrey’s first creative bike rack. Its simple yet symbolic design references Fraser Highway, the Fraser River, a Fraser fir tree, and Mount Baker. “View from the Top” and “Lifting Hands” by Chito Maravilla is a two-part artwork that also functions as a gate and wall panel on a new park washroom at Maple Green Park. Learn more about these recent artworks at this free artists’ talk with Cerman and Maravilla in the Meeting Room of Fleetwood Public Library.
