Hit the Greens

Even though vacation plans are on hold, a few hours on the links can make you feel as though you’ve been able to take that getaway anyway. Maybe it’s the gently rolling greenery, the exercise, the serenity, the discipline that’s required, or the conversation if you’re among friends. The rules are a little different these days, and there may not be a 19th hole to celebrate your game, but golf, at a local course, is a great way to escape everyday life for a few hours.

With extra precautions in place, Surrey’s courses are open for play, and we can’t think of a much better way to distance, than on a golf course with spacious greens, blue skies and loads of fresh air.

Concerned about golf etiquette aligning with social distancing? Follow these key do’s and don’ts:

  • Come to the course if you are coughing, feverish or exhibiting any symptoms of cold or flu.
  • Arrive more than 15 minutes before your tee time and no lingering after it’s over. This is not the time for a post-round tailgate.
  • Bring cash to pay: only credit and debit cards accepted.
  • Touch the flagstick.
  • Share a cart with anyone outside your household.
  • Expect to rent clubs or use the clubhouse. And many have restricted access to driving range and practice putting greens.

  • Maintain a physical distance of at least two metres at all times.
  • Bring your own hand sanitizer, snacks and water.
  • Listen to the instructions of the starter overseeing the first tee.
  • Play preferred lies in sand traps (allows the golfer to pick up and move the ball but not closer to the hole) and smooth sand with your foot before leaving the bunker.

With over 600 parks and green spaces, it seems fitting that some of the lower mainland’s best golf courses call Surrey home.  In fact, we have the highest number of golf courses in any community in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley! And we’re proud to say that our courses are able to accommodate any skill level, price point or course style preference.
