Surrey’s softball summer season began June 17! Softball City and the Cloverdale Athletic Park are hosting the 2022 Canada Cup International Softball Championship. One of the largest fastpitch events this summer in Surrey, the Canada Cup is on until June 26, which means lots of time to catch high-energy, exciting fastpitch games!
The Canada Cup has been a summer fixture in Surrey since 1993 and features five divisions: Showcase Select and Showcase Gold (under 16s), Futures Select and Futures Gold (under 19s) divisions, as well as international women’s fastpitch. This year, some of the highest ranked women’s teams are entered to play including Team Canada, Team USA, Team Chinese Taipei, Team Netherlands, Team Czech Republic and Team Mexico.
There’s also a special event planned to celebrate Team Canada’s Olympic Bronze medal won at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which took place in 2021 due to a Covid-19 postponment. And on Thursday, June 23, one of Canada’s most accomplished softball athletes, and local phenom, Melanie Matthews, will be officially inducted into the World Baseball Softball Confederation Hall of Fame for the Class of 2019. Recognized as one of the best hitters of all time, Melanie will become one of 17 Canadians to be inducted into the WSBC Hall of Fame!
The tournament will be sure to have some nail-biting competition! The daily game schedule and ticket information can be found on the Canada Cup website.
